Its lit window is packed with baubles, a globe and a red stocking, under the painted awning of the Christmas Eve Shop. Out front, two snowmen keep watch beside a red letterbox stuffed with letters.

No glue is needed, the pieces slot together. The outer frame is printed in green and red tartan, and the right-hand panel carries its own illustration, so the kit still looks finished from the side. Built-in LEDs light the shop window and the alley above it.

Book nook details

Up at the top, a wooden Christmas tree carries a gold star, tinsel garlands and rows of tiny carved ornaments. Higher still, Santa leans out of his sleigh behind a flying reindeer, both cut from thin plywood against a golden sky. The recommended age is simply a guideline, many children ages 6 to 8 have successfully built their book nooks and miniature dollhouses on their own, simply by following the instructions provided in the boxes. If your child is used to building with Legos, they'll manage without too much difficulty.
