The story unfolds from bottom to top. At the temple gate, Mulan rides off in red while her parents watch from the doorway, a little dog at their feet. The red banners on each side quote the old poem inscribed at the Mulan Temple, the one that tells how she drew the bow and went to war as a man. Higher up, a pavilion shows her audience with the emperor, guarded by army drums and crates. Plum blossoms bloom over the rocks, doves cross the sky, and the printed side panels add a painted portrait of the heroine in full armor. Turn on the light and the whole tale glows like a shadow play.
