This Sunny Cafe book nook kit includes 233 pre-cut, pre-coloured pieces in wood and paper, an illustrated step-by-step manual, printed sheets for the menus and the coffee bags, and a small sanding stick for pieces that need easing into place.

No glue is needed, the pieces slot together. The green door really opens, so you can reach the counter inside, and the battery case is hidden in the structure so nothing shows. Built-in LEDs light the shop, and a touch switch on top turns them on.

Look through the left window and you find the coffee bar: an espresso machine, a hand grinder and kraft bags of beans lined up under a scalloped lamp. Inside, rose wallpaper runs above painted wainscoting, and a row of framed oil paintings hangs beside two coffee lists. A shelf holds a green moka pot, a pour-over dripper and jars of coffee, while a wooden dresser displays porcelain figurines and a vase of pink flowers. A seat for two waits by the arched side window, where a cup and a slice of cake are already set out. On the outside of that same wall, a smaller canopy printed cafe curves over the arch, above a brick base with ivy climbing it.

The recommended age is simply a guideline, many children ages 6 to 8 have successfully built their book nooks and miniature dollhouses on their own, simply by following the instructions provided in the boxes. If your child is used to building with Legos, they'll manage without too much difficulty.
